Psychological, sociological methods needed in judicial practices

China's top court called for better integration of psychological and sociological methods in judicial practices, and especially in family law, on Oct 7.

Du Wanhua, commissioner of the Supreme People's Court, made the proposal when meeting with Dong Qi, president of Beijing Normal University.

Du said that psychological research methods, including measurement, assessment, analysis and therapy should be applied in family law cases.

"Family is the cell of a society," said Du. "Since the start of the reform and opening-up policy, family relationships in China have undergone tremendous changes -- the new family moral ethic is still not mature."

"Divorce is fairly common. Misbehavior of some family members directly leads to emotional harm and a decline in social public morality," added Du.

The reform in family law is aimed at maintaining family stability and the legitimate interest of minors, women and seniors, explained Du.

He also called on building flexible solutions to family conflicts and setting up a professional trial team in this sector.

A six-point proposal of concrete methods was initiated, including involving psychology and sociology trained individuals in the reconciliation process, and promoting targeted training for certain judges.

Du also called for frequent and multilevel exchanges among courts, judicial research institutes and colleges.
