The Beijing Tiantan Hospital, under Capital Medical University, officially established a Brain-Computer Interface Clinical and Translational Ward on Friday, marking a milestone in the application of BCI technology in clinical settings in China.

BCI is a communication system that converts the "ideas" in the brain into instructions.

Collaborating with other partners, the hospital will focus on BCI research, clinical trials, and the promotion of related technological achievements with the help of this newly established ward.

"This is the first ward in China to apply BCI technology in a clinical setting," said Cao Yong, director of the ward and deputy director of the Neurosurgery Center at the hospital.

The establishment of this physical ward means that the BCI clinical transformation system has officially entered the stage of standardization," said Cao.

He added that the ward is currently conducting clinical trials with the Beinao-1 BCI device.

Beinao-1 is the world's first high-throughput wireless fully implanted chip and is an electroencephalogram-based BCI system.

Building on this initiative, the hospital and its partners will establish a nationwide training platform for clinical doctors, engineering technicians, and researchers, according to the hospital.

"This ward will drive the construction of a professional team in BCI-related fields," Cao said.
